Options and Customizations

In general, options are packages of code that provide bolt-on functionality to a CMS, while customizations are changes we make to the source code that can give each website a unique personality and improve the functionality beyond available options. The choice to use an option or to customize largely depends upon the particulars of a website and the intended goal. Costs are driven by the complexities of implementation. Options: Are often referred to as plug-ins or modules, depending upon the lexicon of the particular CMS in use. There are many options available with the CMSs we use. Some of the more popular options include:

  • Email list tool for sending out HTML and text-formatted emails. These emails can be used to send newsletters, updates or invitations.
  • Calendar of events
  • Human or robot test for forms. An extra field that requires the user to enter in the letters that appear distorted in a small image before the form can be submitted.
  • Photo Galleries
  • Accelerator for speeding up the delivery of web pages and images.
  • Role manager for websites that have multiple editors/contributors and that want granular control over who has access and what they have access to.

Customizations: Customizations can be anything that’s not easily executed using an option. Examples of past customizations include:

  • Change key elements like left or right side bar contents, header images, and colors based on category, page or post.
  • Retrieve, format, and present data from RSS feeds, databases, or other API-driven data resources.
  • Search engine optimization. Keyword research and keyword to content maps.
  • Custom flash photo animations including slideshows with and without text.
  • Accept payments online without incurring the expense of a full eCommerce catalog and shopping cart setup. Good for a limited number of products.
